BICYCLE COMMUTER ACT !!!

I just learned of the Bicycle commuter act which has been signed into law and will take effect Jan. 1, 2009. The measure was recently passed as part of the 451 page emergency economic stabilization act of 2008 also known as the $700 billion bailout bill. Businesses will recieve a monthly $20 tax credit for every employee who rides to work, which they can then reimburse those workers. I have challenged the hospital who is my employer to adopt this act and by promoting a healthy and active lifestyle for their employees and I encourage you to do the same at your place of employment, lets get this town on two wheels ! - Summer

Well We Were Kinda Successful

After about 6 loads of logs, a bunch of dirt, and a bunch of sweat, the big double is now a little more doable. We brought the landing back to about 12 feet or so for the take-off. We built a hip to the left of it as well. A couple other jumps here and there and all in all it was a productive weekend.

Hey do you know Greg Norman? If so, thank him for the vicarious help this weekend. He donated a little Toyota 4X4 that made the log moving possible. It's just small enough, capable enough, and scratchable enough to grind down the White Knuckle to the jumps. It was just sitting around in Seattle, not living its full potential, and he gave it to us for just this sort of thing. Thanks Greg!!!!!

OPERATION DOUBLE==TABLETOP

Hey!
Anyone who is interested in doing a little trailwork on Sat morning, be at Dry Hill at about 9ish on Saturday. We are going to fill in the big doubles on the White Knuckle and turn them into table-tops, so us mortals can work up to clearing them. If you have a chainsaw, bring it. We are going to go up the trail and cut 8' lengths of logs that are laying around and haul them down to the jumps via truck. It should only take a couple of hours (maybe 3). Bring your bike so we can try it out as well. If you are going to show, drop an e-mail to Scott at olympicdirtsociety@yahoo.com
Hope to see a bunch of you there.

Directions to Dry Hill and the Dam RV Park

Shockingly we have been hearing from quite a few people that are coming out for the first time. There's still a few of them out there I guess.

To Dry Hill:
Follow Highway 101 into Port Angeles. Once in town, go to Lincoln Street and take a Left. Follow uphill passing Albertsons, then travel about 3 miles. Keep an eye open for a road on the left called Walkabout Way. If you pass the log scales, you just passed it. Go up Walkabout and take your first right at the yellow gate and proceed up to the powerlines.

To Elwha Dam RV Park:
From Walkabout Way, continue West to the Highway 112 Junction (about a mile), go right onto HWY 112. Go downhill a short distance and you'll see the RV Park on the Left. If you cross a big ol' bridge, you've gone too far.

IMPORTANT !! DNR MEETING 9-16-08 Port Angeles Library

Thanks Scott for a heads up and reminder on this, just wanted to add a few more tid bits of information as to why it is important to show your face at this meeting. As a group of mountainbikers we want to show that our presence cannot be ignored so now's our chance to be heard, also apparently the new director of recreation is more bike friendly (worked with the Capitol Forest folks). Why this new focus on recreation? Help DNR chart a course for recreation in Washington

The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will be looking to user groups and individuals to help create a new vision for recreation on DNR-managed forestlands, aquatic lands and natural areas. Throughout the month of September, DNR will host nine workshops across the state to gather input from interested citizens.

We invite you to come share your thoughts on the direction of recreation in Washington . Where do you recreate? What kinds of recreation activities do you enjoy? How easily can you access recreation on state-managed lands? Drop by various topic stations at one of the workshops, talk to staff and provide your thoughts on these and other questions.

DNR will bring your answers to these and other questions to the newly formed Sustainable Recreation Work Group. This group was established by the 2008 Legislature to assist DNR in developing a long-term vision that ensures safe, sustainable, and enjoyable outdoor recreation on DNR-managed land.

The last time the state officially addressed recreation issues on DNR-managed lands was 37 years ago with the passage of the Multiple Use Act in 1971. This act is based on the concept of state lands being available for multiple uses where appropriate, including various types of recreation. Since then, the face of recreation has changed significantly beyond what anyone envisioned. New forms of recreation have come on the scene including paragliding, mountain biking and paintball. Motorized off-road vehicle use has more than doubled in the state in the last 10 years. And, the overall volume of visitors to state lands has grown dramatically.

The Multiple Use Act still provides a solid foundation for recreation in Washington . Your input will help identify ways to better take into account the changing nature of recreation, pressures from a growing population, and the need to ensure the environmental health of DNR-managed lands.

Look for future e-mail messages with more information about the Sustainable Recreation Work Group, including a Web page address. In the meantime, if you'd like directions to any of the workshops, call Jana Greer at 360-902-1730 or send an e-mail to jana.greer@dnr.wa.gov.
Hope to see you all there tomorrow ! - Summer

DNR Meeting

Hey everyone,
There is an important meeting with the DNR on Tuesday night at the Port Angeles library regarding the future of recreation on DNR lands. Across the state mountain bikers have been coming out in droves, so lets try and continue that trend and make a good showing. It's to all of our benefit for sure. I believe the meetin starts at 6pm. For more info, you can go to www.ridemonkey.com/forums go to the Pacific Northwest link and look for the DNR post.

Meeting Summary

Well that was a productive meeting wasn't it? I'll report that which I remember do to about a 2 1/2 hour length!!
-Laurie (the volunteer coordinator of the Olympic Adventure Route) came and requested our club adopt a 1 1/2 mile section below Kelley Peak. Sean stepped up to be the club leader for this project.
-Wayne Fitzwater was present and shared his bosses reaction to some of the press from the races. Some good, some bad.
-Sean H. brought some info regarding the Mt. Muller enhancement proposed by the National Forest. Please take some time and send in a comment (hopefully in support) of the changes.
-We talked about the Fall Down, but I can't recall who's doing what?? Sorry
-The club trip was brought up and is still planned for the first weekend of October. See Summer for more details.
-Casey & Sean talked about the need to update our insurance shortly.
-The Roundtable. Several of the club members indicated that morale was low amoungst a few members. We had a small group, with most of the core members so we let it out. Tyler even cried. Without getting into all the details, I believe there were a few misconceptions clarified and roles defined. One tangible change is that each meeting will feature a different chairperson. Summer volunteered to lead the next meeting, which includes setting the agenda.

That's all I remember. If I forgot anything important, contact me and I'll let it be known.

ODS represent at FOCF XC and SD races !

Some riders from ODS decieded to test their skills for the first time at a 15 mile XC race as well as the 6 mile Super D race in Olympia Washington ! Friends of Capital Forest FOCF was the host and they did a wonderful job of keeping us entertained, well fed, and very stoked to say the least ! Check them out at http://www.capitolforest.com/races2008.html as well as http://www.capitolforest.com/friendsofcapitolforest.html. FOCF plays host to a series of races during the year and we were able to hit up the last of their series. It was a blast, the scene was amazing with many familiar faces of those who have made their way over at some point or another to participate in our events as well. I can't say enough about our experience there, the camping area was phenomenal and the trails keep you wanting to come back for more. Representing team ODS was Sean Halberg taking in a 2nd in Sport XC and 7th in SD, Tyler Campbell a 1st in sport XC and a 4th in SD, Summer Northern 1st in sport XC and 5th pro SD and Shawn Sinskie showing up sunday for the SD and taking home 9th for the Expert Class. I will have to say that for a bunch of Downhillers we didn't do too bad representing the XC scene and we all had a blast. Check them out and come with us next year !!!!

New Pro/Expert Line

King Diamond is the latest addition to the Hill, and it's ready to ride. It's super soft and off-camber, but killer. We logged about 120 hours building it, and wasted no time in trying it out. I crashed on my second run, but it's so soft right now, it's no big deal. We will probably do a little "pimping" in a few sections, but not much, it almost rides perfect! Good job and thanks to everyone who helped out.

Trailwork Thursday Night

We have an exciting new trail building oportunity!! We will be working on it on Thursday night and this weekend. Bring machete's, pruners, and things to pull small stumps. We will be up there by 5pm or so and the combo lock will be in place. The work area is up by the start ramp.

Monday, July 28, 2008

Kelly's Peak Cleansweep !

The Horsetrail on Kelly's peak has received a makeover this last weekend, the in your face bushes have been removed and you can now see where you are going ! Thanks for the ODS crew of Tyler, Summer, Mitch and Sean H who went up there to take on this task and play clean up. Also an exciting addition has been added to the bottom, you no longer have to ride road back to your vehicle, the olympic discovery trail crew has added the extension to their trail that leads you all the way back to the Elwah Bridge. The new extension is amazing, its wide enough to pass as well as a series of bridges, so get up there and check it out !

Not Quite A Weekly Update

Hey everyone,
Well it's been a while. There have been some phenominal rides going on lately, or so I've heard. There is a Fluidride race camp going on this weekend on Dry Hill. The next race is right around the corner, so time to start thinking about course planning and prep. How about something new off of Double Bypass?? We're trying to organize a World Cup Viewing Party this weekend, more info to follow on that.

Weekly update

Hello everyone,
A busy weekend of riding and working. Last Thursday's work and Sunday mornings work paid off with some sweet new surface and one new jump to flat on Braeburn. That trail is wicked fast! The new jump will eventually be a high speed hip thing, or maybe we'll have to move it?

Sad news about our friend Jay. Like he doesn't have to overcome enough, now he's got a busted collar-bone. He's so tough, he drove home to Bremerton to go to the hospital. We're going to invite him out for the World Cup Breakfast Party just to keep his spirits up. Lars has opted not to go to the World Cups up in Canada, so I guess we have to root for Luke????

No one is going to be around this weekend I guess. A bunch of people are heading down to Mt. Hood this weekend for Fluidride #3. Get ahold of Shawn or Casey if you want to talk carpooling. Sounds like a good weekend for some XC Mayhem!!!

Moving slowly forward on getting a school bus for shuttling amoungst other uses. Hopefully up and running by the next FR Cup?

That's all for now.

No reason, just a sweet shot!

Just a sweet shot!

Trail Work on Thursday Night

As we talked about in the meeting, a group of us will be going up Thursday evening for some trail work. We've got a lot of little things to do, but nothing major. If you haven't seen it yet, go check out Mitch's loop. We went through and buffed it out in an attempt to get a little flow going. Bee-line is next. The work will probably be followed by a little riding so bring your favorite steed as well.

Car Wash for Lars!!!!!

Well not really. Olympic Dirt Society, NDub Productions and whoever else can chip in, are going to pay for Lars' airfare to ensure that he represents the ODS (and some of his other sponsors...whatever) at the World Cup in Mt. St. Anne and apparently one the following weekend in Bromont. We need him there to kick Lukes ass!!! Anyhow, it looks like it will be about $500-800....ouch! Be creative everyone. I will be talking to a few local businesses to see if they want to contribute. If we all kick in $20 that would help. We do need to get on this because the ticket prices go up as you all know.

Lars used up alot of his resources on his recent trip and he is extremely stoked to be able to continue with this series. I just got off the phone with him and he was kinda speechless last night about it. I think he was about to cry actually...what a fricken sissy!

Anyhow, empty your penny banks and lets start a pile of money. To contribute, either get it to me (Scott), or pledge by e-mail.

Meeting Notes

Good to see everyone last night. It was a fairly productive meeting, here's some quick notes:
-We talked about getting back to organized trail-work days. Every other Thursday, starting next week was the general concensus. We filled out work time sheets for Wayne (are you listening Wayne?).
-We talked about the ODS trip, and didn't come to any decisions. My feeling is that Crankworx might be a good time for the club to pitch in because several people are already going, and more probably would if the club chipped in for a room. I can't go but I'm sure you all will have a great time. Bastards!!!!
-We talked about marking out a sick XC loop (I know I said I was going to do that a couple of weeks ago, but whatever). Maybe a group ride next Thursday night would be a good time to do that?
-Sean reported on the Sadie Creek work party and it sounds like he represented us well.
-We talked about having a party for the next world cup in Mt. St. Anne. I believe it is in late July. We also decided to pledge some cash toward Lars getting out there, more about this in the next post.

The after meeting riding was awsome. There were seven of us, and we did about 4 dh runs followed by the second Kamikazee race. Very fun, very fast! We need to have timed runs down that run...soon!

That's it, see some of you this weekend.

Weekend activities

Hey just a reminder about Sadie Creek work party. I'm actually heading out Saturday morning and coming back at around 12ish. Anyone want to carpool...? Anyone going...?

Trailwork on Dry Hill Sunday morning, let's build some jumps. I will be ribboning off a new line that will be super sweet in some awsome woods if anyone wants to join in for that. Come early to work and then we'll ride later. Please!!

Bridge Building

Hey everyone,
Following is an e-mail sent to me through Wayne. This would be a great opportunity to work together with some moto dudes to show that we are on the same page as them, at least to some degree. I believe these people are mainly dirt bike riders rather than quad gods as well, so they actually may have some skills. Ha ha. Anyhow, the organizer (Jay) is a very committed dude and understands our plight with trail user conflicts. If you have any time at all this weekend, try to make it out to Sadie Creek Trailhead and throw around some dirt with them. I am going to go out there Saturday morning until about noon or so.

Without further adoooo.....

Hello to everyone...........hope this finds everybody doing good and dirt bikin' !!!!!

We have set a date for doing some trail work at Sadie Creek trail with the good folks at DNR.
The fun begins at 9 am June 21st at the parking lot/ trailhead (where the poker run starts from).
There will be several of us camping out for the weekend starting Friday night the 20th, with the DNR
crew and anyone else coming in by 9am Saturday to get started. Of course ALL are invited to camp
out for the weekend and I encourage anyone interested to join us. Lots of good campfire lying, bench racing,
and good old fashioned B.S.but, A VERY family friendly atsmophere.

The DNR trail crew has already done an exellent job on most of the trails out there, but there is a section
thru Susie Creek that is still rutted and in need of hardining. AND I here rumor of a new section of trail
out of the parking area to decrease the road riding sections. WAY COOL.
So, please make plans to join us as more hands make lighter work that goes faster and is alot of fun.
Besides we have a reputation to uphold.....DNR thinks our past projects have been some of the best they
have done and they enjoy working with our group. Plus the more voulnteer hours, the better DNR scores
on their grant applications to get more trail and more maintence!!! Basically, the more we do, the more we get.

Please send me an email and let me know if you can be there or be square.

As always, please don't hesitate to call or email me with any questions.
Lets blow DNR away with a huge turn out.......

Cheers,
JAY

Quite a week

Well last week the hill got some use. Fluidride hosted 32 high schoolers from the Puget Sound, to a week of riding, eating, riding, eating, and eating. Shawn Sinskie participated quite a bit and is psyched to start something similar around here. The trails are dusty and slick, and hard to work on.

I will be marking a cross-country loop using something old, something new, something borr..... you know. It will be a combination of ribbons and ground paint. The goal is to start refining a super sweet loop or maybe two to incorporate into a race in the next year or so. Tires make the best trails, so please give the routes a chance. I have been machete trail building a bit up there and some of the spurs make pretty sweet XC runs. If you want to take part in the design of these, let me know. I plan to be up there Thursday and Sunday morning.

That's all I got

Last weeks meeting

Well last weeks meeting was not too constructive. Even a fire and a canopy couldn't keep our spirits from being dampened. We utilized the small attendance, and the inclimate weather to justify a trip to Peaks to warm up a bit. Yada yada yada.... I think we should try and have another meeting asap as there are things to discuss and it's been quite a while since we've come together. If you're interested in this happening, start getting in touch with people. This Thursday is an option for me personally.

FYI There is a camp for high schoolers up on the hill this week hosted by Fluidride. I don't know all the details, but watch the newspaper, they may cover it.??

Gold Creek Wrap Up

Come on, one more run!!!!
The aftermath.
Poor trail conditions
Don't look down
Somebody get a leach

First ODS Gold Creek assult of the year, but certainly not the last. A few downed trees didn't stop us. Weather was perfect!! Here's some pictures taken by Tyler. There were 12 of us (including 5 of our Port Townsend neighbors). What next, maybe Sadie Creek???

Gold Creek Ride Update

The current plan is to meet where the pavement ends on Palo Alto Rd. There are signs for Dungeness Forks and Tubal Cain Trail yada yada ... Meeting time is 10:30ish on Sunday May the 25th. Call 477-9288 if you are going to be late!! I have made a map with a couple of routes for the ride, which include a number of "bail-outs". It could be a pretty rigorous but oh so rewarding ride. Some large trees are down on the Lower Dungeness Trail (aka logrides!!!), and we may hoof it through some snow.

Be there or be a roadie

ODS+ Gold Creek = XC Mayhem!!!!

Well not really, but we are going to hit the upper Dungy for the first time this year. Not sure on the route, but it will surely involve the Gold Creek Trail. All paces welcome, bring a lunch and a lot of water. Might even have a little bonus trail if the road is still blocked??????
Check out this old video I dug up. It's got some Gold Creek and some more familiar trails as well.

Contact Scott by Saturday and we should have the route/meeting place figured out.

Fluidride Cup DH/DS #2

It was another big downhill family reunion up at Dry Hill for the 2nd Fluid Ride Cup of the season. The sun came out in all its glory when we were there to enjoy watching the ever entertaining section of "justice" on the trail. The rain came at night as we slept just to make the trails a little more perfect for our downhill race in the morning. We had 265 riders sign up this time so we had quite the the display of riders as well as spectators with loads of smiles as well as the cow calls of the homemade noise makers thanks to Mitch Mcdougal which he made from scraps of old bike parts. Thanks to all that volunteered to make this event happen, the overwhelming dedication from the folks from Olympic Dirt Society - Josh, Mitch, Summer, Tyler, Dave, Scott, Casey, Lars, Sean, Shawn, Marty....I could go on, your help has been greatly appreciated. Now Lets get ready for FRC #3 in Mount Hood OR.
Results will be posted soon

Fluidride Cup DH/DS #1

The fluidride cup came on strong with a turn out of around 300 smiling racers signing up despite the mud packed start to practice friday. This was quite a display for a regional race thanks to the combined efforts of Fluidride and Hurricane Racing as well as the help from our very own ODS. We all dried up in time to see the Dual Slalom races on Saturday where there was plenty of enthusiasm from the crowd as well as the high spirits of the racers. The northwest has not seen a DS coarse in quite awhile so it was a thrill to have it come back and take us by a storm. The rain held off long enough to get in the Downhill race run where Luke Strobel and Katrina Strand took the top spot for the Pros on the podium. What an exciting event now don't forget about the rest of the series with the next race in Mt. Hood May 10th and 11th. We will see you there !

Dry Hill Update

ODS has been busy this week getting ready for our first race the Fluid Ride Cup April 5th and 6th so there will be no shuttle runs going this coming weekend. We need to keep the trails clear so we can get everything primed and ready for race conditions. Feel free to swing by and help out if you feel like swinging a shovel and helping out with a good cause.

Tuesday Fun Rides !

Just a reminder that we are still doing the Tuesday fun rides, this week Tyler, Sean and Summer went out to Salt Creek and rode up the road (me in granny gear) on Striped Peak, caught our breath and then had a blast whizzing down the smooth, fast single track to the bottom, if my legs would have let me I would have done a second loop - hopefully soon ! We do these cross country rides every tuesday so don't miss the next one. Location to be announced. Happy Thursday !

Speedy Beavers Clinic

This weekend was a blast with so many women coming out to ride, I would say it was a huge success and with many smiles. About 23 women came out to ride at Dry hill where they were split up into 3 different groups based on riding ability. Thanks to the Speedy Beaver Racing team to put on this event and with the help of Shawn and Summer from ODS many women benefited from the experience and put any anxiety of racing aside to learn this sport or just better themselves and their ability to ride ! If you are interested in monthly women rides with the Speedy Beaver you can look up there site at www.speedybeaverracing.com to see where they are riding next !

Spring Shuttle Day A Success !

What another awesome time we all had this weekend with ODS and crew everyone did a great job keeping the shuttle lines flowing, the burgers cooking, and the fire burning. With around 200 riders I would say this event was a success ! Saturday was event full with all the helpers scattered throughout the hill working on the DS, one liner, motoguzzi and a couple of new bridges. Thanks for all your help ! Sunday was amazing, with shuttles starting up at nine we had perfect weather and I can say the same for the dirt. We had quite a show of ladies and Groms this year so its nice to see some new faces as well as our old Family from years back - what a good feeling ! Thanks to all for making this happen and putting a lot of lasting smiles on the faces of many ! Now get ready for the Fluid ride cups first race APRIL 4-6. See you there !
